Interview Questions

1. Could you start by sharing a bit about yourself?

If you ask me about the most influential year of my life, I would have to say it was age 10. This was the year I first picked up a camera, the year I first started designing clothes with my sister in the safety of our “craft room” and the year I first started regularly reading InStyle magazine. Now, at age 22, I own my own photography business, run a small style blog and work for a local magazine. Who knew 10-year-old me was onto something so great? My apartment is full of novels and stacks of magazines because I can’t ever read enough, and I try to start every day off with at least fifteen minutes of yoga (or cuddles with my cat, Elliott.)

2. Could you tell us about your blog and what inspired you to start one?

I originally started my blog as a way for me to get my thoughts and feelings out of my head and into the world. It became a style blog in November 2016 when I decided I wanted my social media to have a more cohesive look. People always told me how much they loved seeing my outfits on Instagram so I figured I should take it up a notch and provide them with links to products online. Now that I have such a large social media following, I plan to use my voice to advocate for local causes I am passionate about (while doing so in style, of course.)

3. Who is your fashion inspiration?

I follow a lot of Instagram models and influencers like Alexis Ren (@alexisren), Lauren Bullen (@gypsea_lust) and Aida Domenech (@dulceida). They all have impeccable style. Alexis has nailed the LA look and Lauren has the perfect bohemian beach vibe to her wardrobe — both women are free spirited and have a “no fuss no muss” approach to their style — but Aida’s looks are very bold and uninhibited. I love the chances she takes with her wardrobe. Another girl I think has fearless style is Indy Blue (@indyblue_), a videographer who makes me nostalgic for my carefree teenage years. She just started Shop Indy Blue (@shopindyblue) so her followers can bid on her clothing.

4. How would you describe your style?

My style morphs depending on the season (and my mood), but my everyday look is clean cut and classic. I love denim and cognac leather, so my go-to look is always a variation of black jeans with a nice tailored top and simple loafers or slides.

5. What are your favorite stores to shop at, and why?

I’m very big on shopping the sales rack and always look for sale pieces online at Madewell, J. Crew and Urban Outfitters. As for online-only stores, I love Australian brands such as Mura Boutique and White Fox Boutique.

6. What is an item you splurge on?

Everything?! Kidding, but I spend the most money on shoes and bags. Every time I see a high-quality leather heel or bag, my mind is already counting how much money I have in my bank account.

7. What is your next fashion must have?

I have seriously wanted a pair of platform sandals for the longest time! I’ve tried ordering a few pairs online but none of them have been perfect. I’m hoping to find some super funky platforms for this spring. I’m also obsessed with cropped flare jeans right now, specifically the ones that are frayed around the ankle (like Lauren Bushnell’s frayed jeans on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ9XLrpDR26/?taken-by=laurenbushnell)

8. How do you handle fashion trends? (Do you like to keep up with them or not pay attention to them at all…)

I follow twitter accounts like Who What Wear (@WhoWhatWear) and STYLECASTER (@StyleCaster) for updates on current trends, but take their advice with a grain of salt. While I do like to see how trends develop, I’m more likely to make my own trends or take something I am seeing pop up on social media and figure out how I can wear a toned-down version of that look in my everyday life.

9. Do you have any fashion rules when putting an outfit together?

If I don’t feel confident in an outfit, I don’t wear it out of my apartment. What I put on my body has to be expressive of how I’m feeling that day and reflective of the events I have on my calendar. Outfits that transition from work to play are the best, since I often have a mixture of both throughout my day. There have been times where I’ve left my apartment in something I wasn’t convinced would be right for the day. Each time, I only made it a few steps outside of my apartment building before turning around and putting something else on.

10. For my readers that are looking to freshen up their wardrobe, what is a great fashion tip you can share with them?

Every time you go shopping, try on two pieces you would never think to try on in the first place. Some of my most-complimented pieces are things I picked up in the store and thought “This is kind of weird, I probably won’t even like it.” Trying on pieces that are atypical from your usual look will force you to find out how far you can push your limits when it comes to your style.
