What to pack for a weekend trip

The holidays are right around the corner and the busy travel season is about to be in full swing. I can barely believe that the year is coming to an end but it’s just about here. I have a few trips coming up that are weekend trips. One is to Arlington to see Dallas Cowboys game with my mom and another is a quick trip to New York. Both trips happen within a week of each other.

I feel like I have my packing routine down to a T. I know what I like to bring and even pack an emergency outfit. So, I am going to share my packing tips with you today! So hopefully this will help you out on any upcoming trips and avoid throwing random items of clothing into your suitcase.

Start with the essentials

There have been many trips that I have made it to my destination, and I forgot the basics. Sometimes it is socks or underwear, or even my pj’s that I would wear to bed. Luckily some of those trips were to my parent’s house and I had access to a washer and dryer. So, from those experiences, I have always started packing with those items first. That way I don’t have to go buy the necessities once I get to my location. Get your socks, Pj’s, underwear, bras, etc. in the suitcase first!

Only bring what you need and think versatility

I used to be a huge over-packer. I would get stressed out and basically bring a huge suitcase full of clothes for a weekend trip back home to Houston. After going on a few extended weekend trips out of state, I cut that down real fast! It was more about how many different outfits can I create out of these 6 items of clothing. Of course, this is going to look different for each of you depending on the type of trip you are about to go on.

Keep in mind that the simpler you make it the easier it will be during your trip. For example, if this is a weekend trip for thanksgiving, I would create three outfits around one pair of skinny jeans. My favorite jeans are the easiest for that type of event, and I would also bring a skirt or dress option because we usually go to church that Sunday and have lunch with the family. You can overcome the feeling of overpacking just like I did!

Pack an emergency outfit

Finally, the last tip is to ALWAYS have a backup outfit with you.  For me, it is usually a pair of dark wash denim skinny jeans and a nice top. During the winter months, it’s normally a long sleeve sweater like the ones from Zara. During the summer months, I pack a cute flowy dress. Both outfits are versatile easy to throw on last minute and you can basically wear that to any type of event. This can be included in your outfits that you are already packing for the weekend. For example, I will most likely already be packing my skinny jeans for another outfit. However, if there is a last-minute dinner that comes up a can throw on my nice sweater, pull on my boots and I am ready to go.

Packing is strategic if you want it to be successful. Honestly, it is important and can make or break your trip. I don’t want to get somewhere and must buy all new clothes, but a little planning goes a long way. Yes, it can be tricky but packing smart can save you the stress!

Quick Recap: Pack the essentials first! This is your socks, underwear, PJs, bras, etc. The stuff you really can’t live without on a trip. Next, pack versatile clothing options, and remember mix and match pieces are key. Last but not least, have that emergency, backup outfit in your suitcase. You never know when you’re going to need it. 🙂
