A guide to breathable fabrics to wear this summer

Breathable fabrics for summer

Hello and welcome back to the blog! I have a good one for you today which is a guide on the most breathable fabrics to wear this summer. This blog post is probably my most favorite to write because I know there must be other women out there who struggle during the summer months. I wish I was that woman who could be in direct sunlight in the middle of summer and barely break a sweat.

But that is not me lol The reason why I don’t sit out in the sun like that is to preserve my skin and I sweat SO easily. I could even go as far and say that it makes me self-conscious. Why can’t I just go sit out in a park and look cute and not sweat off all my make up? I was not blessed with that and this girl stays hydrated on top of that haha

So for those of us who need to be hella strategic with our outfits this summer, this blog post is for you! I have the does and don’ts of which fabrics to wear this summer. So, let’s get into it starting with OG breathable fabric, linen!

Linen

As I said, linen is the OG of breathable fabrics. There’s a reason you see so many people wear linen pants during beach vacations or any tropical resort location. Linen is extremely breathable and can look very elegant as well! The only thing that bothers me is that linen is always creased. It does take a bit to get used to but that is the nature of the fabric. If you don’t want to wear 100% linen pieces maybe try a linen blend item of clothing. That will still get you that cool feeling and fewer wrinkles.

Chambray/ Lightweight Denim

Another breathable fabric to wear this summer is Chambray. Usually, this type of fabric is made using a higher thread count. The higher the thread count means the weave of the fabric is thinner which is perfect and breathable. There are also styles of denim that are more lightweight. I always found this type of jeans at Zara, for example, their slouchy jeans are super lightweight. If you are trying to avoid denim material altogether swap those pieces out for chambray pieces.

Silk

Silk pieces are also on the list of breathable fabrics to wear this summer. There is a sweat disclaimer with this one though. Silk tops or skirts (whatever item of clothing you have) they absorb sweat almost immediately. If you want to wear your silk top this summer, I would recommend you wear this to an indoor event. I would avoid wearing this to go dancing with friends or outdoor bars.

Jersey

Jersey is a combination of wool, cotton, and some synthetic fibers that are loosely woven together. This makes jersey pieces very lightweight and breathable. Another reason I love a jersey fabric is that it takes a lot for that fabric to get wrinkled. And if there is a wrinkle or two you can easily steam out the wrinkles. This makes traveling very easy with items of clothing made from jersey fabric.

Cotton

The ultimate breathable fabric to wear this summer is anything made of cotton or cotton blend. You really can’t go wrong with cotton except for when you throw cotton clothing items into the dryer. Lightweight cotton is the best fabric to wear in the summer months because it is a natural fiber that absorbs moisture and allows airflow between the fibers.

Basically, if you sweat a bunch, cotton items of clothing can camouflage the sweat stains and allow your body to cool down. There is a variety of clothing that you can find using cotton or cotton blend material. Maybe you don’t wear cotton year-round, but I would shop more intentionally for items of clothing using cotton during the summer months.

Fabrics you should not wear in the summer/humid months

I am going to do a quick rundown of the fabric that you should steer clear of. I‘m not gonna go into a deep explanation of each just know that these fabrics are not your friend in this heat. First up are Nylon, Rayon, and Polyester. These are all man-made fabrics and are your worst nightmare. If you sweat very easily like me, you don’t want to wear these fabrics and the fact that polyester stains so quickly? No ma’am!

Up next are the obvious ones lol We’re talking about Leather, Wool, Denim, and Fleece. Just the thought of putting these items of clothing on makes me sweat! Denim does get a little bit of a pass because there is some denim out there that is a lighter type of fabric and kinda fits within the chambray category. It’s the really stiff, heavy, true denim that can be uncomfortable if you’re walking around in triple-digit heat this summer. Leather and wool is a no brainer. Save those pieces for the fall and winter!

I hope this post on the most breathable fabrics to wear this summer was helpful! I definitely have been shopping for a few new items for my summer wardrobe and this info has been a lifesaver.
